Arts Orange County (ArtsOC) is the independent nonprofit arts council for Orange County, California, and is dedicated to sustaining, strengthening, and advancing its creative ecology. Designated by the County as its official local arts agency, ArtsOC is our community’s leading advocate and service provider for the arts and arts education. The National Docent Symposium Council (NDSC), is the only national docent/guide organization providing multiple platforms for the continuing education and exchange of ideas for docents and guides since the first national docent symposium in 1981.

We serve the docent/guide community:

  • Sponsoring biennial symposia for the professional development of docents and guides
  • Providing an up-to-date interactive website with articles of interest and shared practices for docents, guides and educators
  • Hosting an online forum for ongoing issues of importance for docents and museum educators; the National Docents Forum, a closed Facebook group
  • Publishing the Docent Handbook 2 © and Tours for Children and Teens ©, publications for docents/guides authored by docents

American Alliance of Museums Mission and Planning

  • The museum has a clear understanding of its mission and communicates why it exists and who benefits as a result of its efforts.
  • All aspects of the museum’s operations are integrated and focused on meeting its mission.
  • The museum’s governing authority and staff think and act strategically to acquire, develop, and allocate resources to advance the mission of the museum.
  • The museum engages in ongoing and reflective institutional planning that includes involvement of its audiences and community.
  • The museum establishes measures of success and uses them to evaluate and adjust its activities.
